Why Synthesis

Human health is too complex for simple answers.

Health information is often pulled toward two extremes: certainty without enough evidence, or dismissal without enough curiosity. Synthesis exists in the harder middle ground.

We believe people deserve a better way to navigate science—one that respects evidence without pretending that every question is settled, and one that leaves room for biology, lived experience, relationships, environment, and the complexity of being human.

What We Do

Synthesis Human Systems is a science communication and natural health education project. Our goal is to translate scientific knowledge and lived experience into meaningful systems for understanding health and living more intentionally.

We explore questions across human biology, cognition, movement, circadian health, stress, nutrition, environment, and ancestral health. The aim is not to hand readers a universal protocol. It is to build a clearer map: what the evidence suggests, where the evidence is uncertain, how a mechanism might work, and what questions are still worth asking.

Our North Star

Humans are adaptive, meaning-seeking beings with an extraordinary capacity for growth. We flourish when our biology, minds, relationships, and environment are aligned—and we tend to struggle when those systems are chronically pulled out of alignment.

That idea gives Synthesis an evolutionary and ecological lens, but not an appeal-to-nature rule. “Ancestral” does not automatically mean better, and “modern” does not automatically mean worse. Evolution can help us generate useful questions about movement, light, food, sleep, stress, social life, and environment; evidence still has to do the work of answering them.

How We Use Evidence

Scientific evidence is not a single category. A randomized human trial, an observational study, an animal model, a cell experiment, a mechanistic hypothesis, and a personal experience can all be useful—but they do not justify the same level of certainty.

Synthesis tries to make those differences visible. We prioritize primary research and high-quality reviews for major claims, identify important limitations, distinguish human findings from animal or mechanistic evidence, and update articles when the evidence or our interpretation meaningfully changes.

Personal experience has a place here, too. It can reveal questions, illustrate a practice, or explain why a topic matters. It is context—not proof.

David DeBonis is a writer, researcher, storyteller, and science communicator whose work spans linguistic discovery, biomedical research, and natural health education. He holds a B.A. in English Writing and Linguistics and an M.S. in Marketing and Communications. He is also a NASM-certified personal trainer, a licensed teacher, and a health coach.

Science-backed does not mean that every question has a definitive answer. It means that our conclusions are informed by the best available evidence and communicated with appropriate context and uncertainty.

We distinguish between findings from human clinical research, observational studies, animal research, mechanistic evidence, emerging hypotheses, and personal experience. When evidence is preliminary or conflicting, we aim to say so clearly rather than presenting uncertainty as certainty.

Who writes Synthesis Human Systems articles?

Synthesis is written and developed by David DeBonis, a writer, researcher, storyteller, and science communicator with a background in writing, linguistics, marketing and communications, research, and health and fitness education.
